About the collegePresidency University is the most unique university in India founded in the year 1817 at Kolkata as the first ever instate for western type higher education in the continent. At that time the name of the college was Hindoo College.

  • In the year 1855 the British Government had taken the university under its own administration and named College of Bengal presidency.
  • Finally in the year 1857, Presidency College was merged into the newly found University of Calcutta.
  • After that a long period the college was under the regulations of Calcutta University and the college has been widely known as one of the finest centers for higher education in India.
  • In July 2010, Presidency College has come out from the regulations of the Calcutta University and become an autonomous university named Presidency University.
  •  It was one of the first institutes of Western-type higher education in Asia.

International Collaborations:-

  • Presidency University Signs MoU with The University of Groningen, On Wednesday 27th Nov 2013, a top delegation from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, including their President, Professor Sibrandes Poppema, visited Presidency University, Kolkata, to meet the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Malabika Sarkar and the members of faculty.
  • MoU with Trinity College, Dublin 29th Nov was another landmark date for Presidency University, the beginning of an important international collaboration. Presidency signed an MoU with Trinity College, Dublin, the premier university of Ireland. This university-wide MoU for the two institutions was for student exchange, faculty exchange and research collaborations. 

Research Projects (2012-13):

  • Indian Council of Social Science Research funded Major Research Project on “Choice of Traditional Contraceptive among Currently Married Women in Kolkata: ‘Ultra-Modernism’ or Son Preference” Project Director: Dr. Mousumi Dutta Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 8,71,825 
  • Fuzzy Logix, LLC, NC, USA funded Research Project on “Optimal trading Rule in India” 
    Project Director: Dr. Chitrakalpa Sen, Auro University, Surat and Dr. Gagari Chakrabarti, Presidency University (as Joint project director) 
    Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 3,00,000 (approx) [Fund managed by Auro University, Surat]
  • “Biochemical characterization of SarA and SarR regulators in S. aureus to study molecular genetics” DBT, Govt. of India, 2014-2016. (PI: Prof Adhar C Manna. Rs. 50,00,000).
  • “Understanding mechanism of oxidative stress responses by studying catalase regulation in S. aureus”. BRNS, Department of Atomic Energy, 2014-2016. ( PI: Prof. Adhar C Manna. Rs. 26,64,750).
  • Studies on enhancing biological control mechanism of aquatic weed, water hyacinth through integration of insects and fungal agents. ( DST under SERB- OYS Scheme). PI: Dr Puja Ray.
  • Molecular dissection of polyamine mediated hyper-osmotic stress tolerance in cultivars of indica rice (DBT, Govt. of India, RGYI-Grant); 2013-2016. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PIs: Dr. Kamala Gupta and Dr. Arijit Bhattacharya (Tripura University, Tripura).
  • Culture dependent and independent analyses of prokaryotic communities from the burrows, casts, and guts of earthworms from in and around Kolkata (West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Govt. of West Bengal; 2012-2015. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PI: Souryadeep Mukherjee.

Alumni:- Presidency alumni groups throughout the India and other parts of the world also are invited to join the ‘Presidency University Alumni’. Presidency University Alumni Relations Office will be happy to announce news and events, upload contact details of alumni groups and announce awards and distinctions received by alumni.

Events:-

  • Seminar on “Young Investors awareness programme was organized on 29th Nov, 2012, afternoon for one day.
  • Seminar on “Economic Theory and Policy: Multiple Facets” was organised between 26th and 28th September, 2012.

Extra-Curricular Activities:-

Students' Union: The Students' Union room is located behind main building. The Union has been active since the first half of the 20th century. It is run by a President and a General Secretary.

Sports: Until the mid-1950s the college used to have a lawn tennis court to the west of the premises, which was later replaced by the new building housing the economics, political science and sociology departments as well the college's auditorium, Derozio Hall. Until the mid-20th century the college's sporting facilities were managed and maintained by a Sports Secretary elected from the student body. 

National Service Scheme (NSS)

Sports Cell: In sports cell, the university provides equipments of almost all kinds of indoor and outdoor games for the students; so that students can do some exercise and fresh their minds at their off time.

Cultural Cell: In the cultural cell music dance and drama are included largely.At the time of university social or any other competitions, Cultural Cell takes leading role in participating into them. Same thing happens for sports cell also.

Facilities:-

Library:

  • The library of Presidency University is one of the largest and oldest research and higher education libraries in Kolkata City.
  • It has a large and wide hall in the library that contains 3, 73,422  books and 1, 52,425  periodicals.
  • In according to that internet facility is also available in the library.
  • Therefore students can get almost all types of books for their study subjects.
  • The library has two parts.One is arts library, where all arts books are available and the other one is the science library.
  • Reading rooms are also there for the students; so that they can read books their and note them down into their important parts.

Hostel:

  • Presidency University has two different hostels for boys and girls.
  • Boys’ hostel is known as Government Eden Hindu Hostel.
  • This is 128 years old. The hostel was found in the year 1886.
  • The girls’ hostel is also built at the end of 20th century.
  • The hostels provide all types of facilities with good comfort and perfect environment for studying.

Scholarships:-

  • A limited number of Merit-cum-means scholarships are available for the deserving and meritorious students whose parents or guardian’s monthly income does not exceed Rs. 25,000/- per annum.
  • A limited number of Sheela Kanoria Foundation Scholarships of Rs. 2000/- per month are available for female students. A limited number of Happy Calcuttans Scholarships of the value Rs. 800/- are available for the undergraduate students.
